Literature and the Environment

ENLT 124: Literature and the Environment

This course is offered every three semesters, on a cycle with Ecotheatre (ENLT/THTR 278) and Climate Fiction (ENLT TBD). Readings and assignments may vary by section.

Description

This course explores the myriad ways in which human beings exist in relationship with the environments they inhabit. Through a selection of novels, short stories, poetry, illustrated fiction, comics, film, TV shows, and other works, we will engage with how humans have attempted to capture our encounters with “the environment,” including the other life forms with which we share it. Our discussions will be guided by literary studies, natural science, and Catholic social teaching. Students will be expected to tackle difficult conversations about human complicity in environmental degradation, but are also encouraged to embrace the beauty of the natural world. Ultimately, we aim to better understand the personal and global stakes of humanity’s presence on Earth.
